As far as men’s hosiery is concerned, neutral socks – meaning matching the color of your socks with that of your trouser – were the rule of thumb. But don’t get too hasty, the neutral sock rule isn’t obsolete just yet. At formal occasions, those who like to play safe would still likely opt for neutral socks. However, trends appear to be changing quickly, as bright-colored socks are seemingly finding increasing favor among men who like to spend a moment or two on the sartorial aspect of their character.
- Consider your audience
Bright socks, however, is sort of a catch-all term. It encompasses socks that come with solid and bold colors as well as colorful striped socks, classic patterns such as paisley and argyle, novelty socks with funky patterns and figures, and so on – often with the intention of being purposefully outlandish. Now, it depends as much on the occasion as on the individual wearing the socks. Just as you wouldn’t wear a t-shirt to a job interview, you need to consider your audience when styling your socks for more conservative, formal occasions.
2. Choose carefully
If done properly, it can be a great idea and statement to jazz up a formal outfit (business suits and so on) with a CAREFULLY CHOSEN pair of bright socks. For example, socks with bright-colored stripes of an equal width paired with a simple, casual outfit help make the statement that although your attire is simple, you’ve thought about it. On the other hand, for formal occasions traditional patterns such as argyle (but with bright solid colors) make a strong, but subtle statement.
3. Color Coordinate
For added elegance, consider socks with colors and patterns that compliment those of your tie or shirt, in fact, it is an overall good idea to choose socks in the same color scheme as your tie, shirt, sweater, sports jacket or pocket square.
4. Texture and Material
As for the material, cotton and wool socks with added fibers are the most common materials for making dress and protective or sports performance socks. You will find many different designs on these materials. However, if you want to stay on the luxurious side, silk and cashmere dress socks are an ideal choice. They may be on the pricier side, but nothing will look better paired with a fine worsted suit and handmade Italian shoes!
